I finally got the chance to stop by La Vilos Coffee and Roastery, a café right in the heart of Surabaya that’s been on my list for a while. It’s not just another coffee shop—it’s a place where you can enjoy a strong cup of coffee, hearty food, and a relaxed vibe perfect for both working and hanging out.

What I Ordered here

1. Butterscotch Latte

I started with their Butterscotch Latte, and honestly, I was impressed. The coffee itself was strong and rich, perfectly balancing the sweetness of the butterscotch. What surprised me was that even though I didn’t ask for less sugar, it wasn’t overly sweet—it was just right. If you’re someone who enjoys a latte with personality (not too sugary, but still indulgent), this is a solid choice.

2. Nasi Ayam Sambal Matah

For food, I went with the Nasi Ayam Sambal Matah. The sambal matah stood out immediately—rich, bold, and authentic, with a kick of spice that hits you just right. It might be a little too spicy for those who aren’t into chili, but don’t worry, you can always ask them to tone down the heat. At 42,000 IDR, the portion size was fair, and overall, it felt worth it for the flavor.

Coffee Beans and Roastery

One of the best things about La Vilos is that they roast their own beans. So if you end up loving the coffee, you can actually buy their beans and brew them at home. It’s a nice touch that sets them apart from many other coffee spots in the city.

Atmosphere and Vibe

La Vilos offers both indoor and outdoor seating. If you’re planning to sit outside, I’d recommend going in the evening—it gets pretty hot during the day under the Surabaya sun. Indoors, it’s cozy and quiet, with music that isn’t too loud, making it a great place for work-from-café (WFC) sessions. They are also provided the private meeting complete with projector, air conditioned room, and high speed internet wifi, so don’t worry if you need a private meeting session with your office colleagues or clients.

During lunchtime, the café does get a bit busier with nearby office workers on their break, but outside of that, it’s fairly chill. They even provide Uno cards and Uno Stacko, which adds a playful touch if you’re hanging out with friends.

Location and Opening Hours

La Vilos is strategically located in central Surabaya, making it an easy stop whether you’re working nearby or just passing through.

Final Thoughts

La Vilos Coffee and Roastery is more than just a spot for your caffeine fix. With their strong, well-balanced coffee, authentic sambal matah dish, and a welcoming vibe, it’s the kind of café you can visit for work, lunch, or casual hangouts with friends. The fact that they roast their own beans is just the cherry on top.

If you’re in Surabaya and looking for a café that combines good coffee, tasty food, and a relaxed atmosphere, La Vilos deserves a spot on your list.
