Let me tell you about one of my favorite food discoveries in Katong, Buf. No fancy neon signs, no Instagram crowds, no lines of tourists taking selfies. Just pure, old-school flavor and the kind of warmth that only a truly local spot can offer. I found it at Soon Soon Huat Curry Puff, and trust me, you’re going to want to add this place to your breakfast or lunch rotation.
Family-Run and Full of Heart
Soon Soon Huat has been around for decades, starting with the legendary Madam Lim who invented their iconic spiral curry puff. It’s now run by the third generation, and you can feel that sense of family when you walk in. The aunty behind the counter greeted me with a big smile and so much kindness, I immediately felt like a regular.
The place is clean and cozy, perfect for dine-in. Locals come and go like clockwork, grabbing their morning kopi and breakfast sets. No tourists in sight. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you just uncovered a hidden gem. Plus, it’s just a short stroll from Chin Mee Chin, so you can do a little Katong food hop if you’re feeling adventurous.

More Than Just Curry Puffs
While they’re famous for their curry puffs (we’ll get there in a second, Buf), the menu is much bigger than I expected. Soon Soon Huat also serves a variety of local delights that make it a great all-in-one stop for a full meal. Think Crispy Chicken Curry Rice, Nasi Lemak, Chee Cheong Fun,Fried bee hoon, lor mai kai, and other classic hawker favorites.
Everything looked fresh, homemade, and super comforting. It’s the kind of food that warms your soul a little.
What I Ordered and What You Should Too, Buf
Alright Buf, here’s where it gets delicious. I tried a bunch of their signature puffs, and each one had its own magic. The pastry is ultra flaky, buttery, and crisp without being greasy.
Here’s what I went for:
1. Curry Puff
A true classic! Filled with soft potato, tender chicken, and a touch of egg, this flaky curry puff delivers that comforting, savory flavor everyone loves.

2. Sardine Puff
Spicy, bold, and packed with rich sardine filling, this puff turned out to be the surprise favorite. Perfect for those who love a kick of heat in every bite.
3. Custard Puff
Warm, silky custard wrapped inside a light and crispy pastry shell. Sweet, creamy, and utterly satisfying a dessert puff that feels like pure comfort.
4. Otah Puff
For something different, the otah puff is fishy, spicy, and full of bold Southeast Asian flavor. A must-try for anyone who loves traditional otah wrapped in a golden puff.
If you want the full experience, I recommend the Happy Set for just $6.80. You get one kopi and a plate of mee with an egg. I had it with my puffs and honestly, it was the perfect combo to kickstart the day.

Final Recommendations
It’s just a few minutes away from Chin Mee Chin, so if you’re already in the Katong area, it’s an easy detour. And Buf, go early if you can. They make everything fresh in small batches, and some items do sell out by lunch.
If you’re looking for a no-frills, full-flavor spot that locals truly love, Soon Soon Huat is it. Whether you’re grabbing one curry puff on the go or sitting down for a full breakfast set, you’ll leave happy (and probably full). Go hungry, bring a friend, and thank me later.
